Despite is name, shepherd's pie has long since lost its exclusive link with sheep and fillings range from simply baked beans, cooked vegetables and beef mince.  Follow the link for a hand-written recipe which was probably penned between 1915 and 1920.  This describes creating some gravy from cold or cheap meat and covering it with potato.
